The Moyaone Reserve is a 1400-acre wooded, residential community in Accokeek, Maryland, just 10 miles south of the Capital Beltway at the Woodrow Wilson Bridge via Indian Head Highway (Route 210). It borders the Potomac River and sits directly across from George Washington’s home, Mount Vernon.
It is situated within Piscataway Park, a 5000-acre national park that spans parts of both Prince George’s and Charles counties. Piscataway Park was established in 1968 by compromise of public and private lands in order to conserve land, preserve sacred American Indian spaces, and preserve the historic view from Mount Vernon.
Piscataway Park comprises seven entities, of which the Moyaone Reserve is one. The others are:
- National Colonial Farm (stewarded by the Accokeek Foundation);
- Hard Bargain Farm (stewarded by the Alice Ferguson Foundation);
- Farmington Landing (stewarded by the National Park Service);
- Fort Washington Marina (stewarded by the National Park Service);
- Accokeek Creek Park (stewarded by the National Park Service); and
- Marshall Hall (stewarded by the National Park Service).
The Moyaone Reserve is geographically divided into seven sectors based on the phases when they were acquired by Alice Ferguson or the Moyaone Corporation between the 1940s and 1970s. Each sector is uniquely named and features landscapes of different elevations and views:
- Apple Valley
- Auburn
- Bonds Retreat
- Bryan Point Road (part of Bonds Retreat)
- Cactus Hill
- Hidden Valley
- Poplar Hill
